Activities

Field Visit (19 February 1982)

In 1962 the old market cross of Perth was in the centre of the lawn E of Dale House, Caithness (ND 1300 5228). The inscription on the stone at the base of the pillar reads: 'Pillar of the Old Market Cross of Perth pulled down by Cromwell's army in 1651 and rebuilt in 1699 and finally taken down in 1763'. The dates 1699 and 1763 are barely decipherable. By 1982 it had been returned to Fingask Castle where it had stood before being moved to Caithness c.1960. It stood at NO 2276 2756 in the grounds of Fingask in 1861.

Visited by OS 14 April 1962 and 19 February 1982.
