(NO 0698 2568) Low's Work (NR) (Weir)

OS 6" map (1959)

The Lowswark is the intake for the aqueduct supplying Perth with water. Its first mention is in 1494 as the 'Auld Wick called Lowswark'. The name seems to have applied to both weir and sluice.

S Cowan 1904; T Pennant 1792

Both the weir and sluice are still in use and are known locally as 'Low's Work'.

Visited by OS (JTT) 26 October 1965.

Low's Work Weir: part in Redgorton ph. Mediaeval, rebuilt 1622-4. Eighty yards long, unmortared boulder rubble with ashlar groins. Formed to divert water into the King's Lade through Perth.

SDD/HBM, March 1967.

(Location cited as NO 069 257). Low's Work: Medieval, rebuilt 1622-4. A low masonry weir on the river Almond, with a fairly modern wood and iron sluice controlling the flow of water to the Perth town lade, which also supplies Huntingtower Bleachworks (NO02NE 84.00).

Watching Brief (7 June 2012)

Alder Archaeology was commissioned by Rubicon Heritage Services on behalf of their client Coffey Construction (I) Ltd to undertake a watching brief at Low’s Work, an historic weir (centred NGR NO 069 256) on the River Almond near Almondbank, Perth and Kinross. This watching brief was the last phase of archaeological work carried out on this project; previous archaeological work had been undertaken by Rubicon. General repair work on the weir was being undertaken to prevent further riverbank erosion. In addition a fish ladder for salmon was being constructed. The watching brief (site code PEX172) was carried out on 7th June 2012 on part of the north side of the weir which was to be removed to construct the fish ladder. The watching brief photographically recorded the removal of stonework and inspected river deposits below the stonework. Nothing of archaeological significance was found and no reliable dating evidence was recovered from beneath the stonework which had been set into the river bed. It was considered that no further archaeological work was required on this area as the stonework bottomed on natural river deposits.
