Alder Archaeology was commissioned by Rubicon Heritage Services on behalf of their client Coffey Construction (I) Ltd to undertake a watching brief at Low’s Work, an historic weir (centred NGR NO 069 256) on the River Almond near Almondbank, Perth and Kinross. This watching brief was the last phase of archaeological work carried out on this project; previous archaeological work had been undertaken by Rubicon. General repair work on the weir was being undertaken to prevent further riverbank erosion. In addition a fish ladder for salmon was being constructed. The watching brief (site code PEX172) was carried out on 7th June 2012 on part of the north side of the weir which was to be removed to construct the fish ladder. The watching brief photographically recorded the removal of stonework and inspected river deposits below the stonework. Nothing of archaeological significance was found and no reliable dating evidence was recovered from beneath the stonework which had been set into the river bed. It was considered that no further archaeological work was required on this area as the stonework bottomed on natural river deposits.
