(NN 9062 5390) (information from F T Wainwright to OS, undated.) A circular fort, known as the 'Black Castle of Pitcastle', stands on an eminence on Pitcastle farm.
It is somewhat overgrown and interfered with, so was not measured by Watson, but it appeared to be of the same type, general size and thickness of wall, as others in the neighbourhood (which average 82' external diameter, with walls from 9' - 13' thick).
W J Watson 1913.
A homestead (c/f NN44SE 7), locally known as the "Black Castle", situated on the brink of a SE-facing slope.
Large stones of the outer wall face are visible intermittently except in the SE where the wall has been bitten into by a now ruinous kiln. The overall diameter is 22.0m. No true wall thickness could be ascertained. The mutilated entrance is in the SW.
Surveyed at 1:2500.
Visited by OS (S F S) 25 February 1975.
