Activities

Field Visit (May 1996 - May 1996)

B009 Laundry or Gardener's House.

Two-storey house in pinkish granite, with slate roof and upstand gables. Symmetrical elevation with central doorway, single windows each side and half-dormers with triangular pediments above. A single small window under the eaves-line above the door. The building is said originally to have been a single-storey building when used as a Laundry and added to considerably when converted to residential use.

Referred to as the laundry in earlier documents, but in recent times has been the Gardener’s Cottage in name and use. The field to the east is known as Laundry field still, although in the 1788 House Farm plan, a small field close to this location, on the north-east side of Fir Park, is titled Gardener's Croft.

Watching Brief (20 February 2024 - 22 February 2024)

NJ 72276 12557 (Centred) Cameron Archaeology conducted a watching brief over groundbreaking works for the installation of cable ducting.

Twelve trenches were excavated between the West Lodge and Gardener’s Cottage. Deposits of building rubble were located beneath driveways and grassed areas though none could be ascribed the demolition of structures in situ. Three ceramic drains were exposed in the courtyard between the Stables and W Stable Block and a further 3 drains were located in other trenches. The foundation of a drystone wall was found ENE of the Walled Garden which may correspond to a feature depicted on the 1st edition OS map.
