Sleepy Hillock, Bridge

An almost intact eighteenth-century bridge crosses the Allt na Bruaich Ruaidhe at Sleepy Hillock. Constructed as part of a military road building programme, the bridge was used until fairly recently to carry the public road over the burn.

The single-arch bridge is built of rubble, with an arch of 6m span. The overall breadth of the bridge is 4.4m,and it is in a much better state of repair than some of its counterparts, as only the parapets are missing.

A series of military roads were built throughout Highland Scotland during the eighteenth century, to link sites of strategic importance. Major General Wade, who, as Commander-in-Chief of Scotland, was responsible for ensuring that rebellious clans were subdued, began this huge programme of construction.

This intact military type bridge is on the line of the Coupar Angus - Fort George military road (see NJ20NE 9 and NJ20NE 10 ).

Other than its missing parapets, this 18th-century military bridge over the Allt na Bruaich Ruaidhe is in an excellent state of repair. The arch of the single span measures 6m in width by 2.2m in height, and the bridge has an overall breadth of 4.4m.
