Archaeology Notes

NT06SE 18 0640 6180

Cowthrople farmstead is described in the Name Book (ONB 1858-61) as, a "small farmhouse one storey high in good repair with suitable offices and farm attached", and the alternative spelling of Cowthraple is noted. It is depicted as a roofed U-shaped building, with two nearby outbuildings, on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Edinburghshire 1863-5, sheet X). On the OS 2nd edition map, (Edinburghshire 1895, sheet XI NE), however, all buildings are unroofed, and it states that the farmstead is 'in ruins'.
