Duirinish Parish Church, 1832. A jauntier alternative to its contemporary Parliamentary kirks, this lofty box in 'carpenter's gothick' is unique of its type on the West. No architect is recorded, although James Ferguson of Portree (superintendent for the Macdonald Estates and close collaborator of James Gillespie Graham) is likely. The exterior, with its Y-tracery and compressed, spike-topped tower like a cardboard cutout, is a frugal version of Gillespie Graham's Rosemarkie church (1818-21); the galleried interior, with its complete set of original furnishings and striking pulpit, also hints at his style.
