Archaeology Notes

HY45SE 69 4546 5184

This windpump was made by Wakes & Lamb, Newark, England 'for Skaill' (m/c number 1450). The tower has 4 legs of rolled steel angle section.

Information from Scottish Industrial Archaeology Survey, GJ Douglas, 1984 (see also DC27655).

This is a complete Newark windmill and pump. Installed in 1946 by a spring, it pumped water to a 2000 gallon storage tank for use in a farm house and outbuildings, as well as being used for irrigation. The windmill and pump became redundant in the 1960s when Westray was connected to mains water.
