Archaeology Notes

ND12SW 54 1060 2373

A township comprising four unroofed buildings, one of which is a long building, and two enclosures is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1877, sheet xlii). Three unroofed buildings and two enclosures are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10560 map (1964).

Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 23 November 1995.

This township, comprising three buildings, a kiln-barn and associated enclosures, was recorded during a pre-afforestation survey of Langwell-Rinsary Braes, Berriedale. A square enclosure lies, isolated, to the NW of the township. Rig covers the adjacent river terraces.

An unnamed settlement is depicted on Roy's map (1747-55) and is depicted and named as 'Knockfin' on Thomson (1822) and named 'Cnoc Fionn' on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1877, sheet xlii).
