Watching Brief (January 2018 - July 2018)
An evaluation was carried out, January – July 2018, in the areas surrounding Hope Lodge and Shepherd’s Cottage in advance of development.
NC 4746 6020 At Hope Lodge six trenches were excavated covering 78m². Features and deposits contemporary with the lodge were recorded.
NC 4753 6008 At Shepherd’s Cottage 14 trenches were excavated covering 289m². Five negative pit-like features were identified, but none were clearly archaeological in nature. A subsequent watching brief identified a number of other negative pit-like features. These were identified as stone holes and, on the basis of this additional information, it is considered that the earlier features were also stone holes.
A known site (NC46SE 7), which lay immediately outside the development area, was surveyed and interpreted as a hut circle.
