Surveying Details

-----------------------------

21 April 1977. A conspicuous piled platform (tilted over at an angle) lies on N side entrance to the Eden Estuary. Its existence is confirmed from OS aerial photos. Source: Pilot Handbook, east coast of Scotland.

Hydrographic Office 1995.

Note: Structure is tide gauge.

Site recorded by Maritime Fife during the Coastal Assessment Survey for Historic Scotland, Fife Ness to Newburgh 1996

(Location amended to NO 49452 21202). This structure is of considerable size and without evident parallel. It is situated in an intertidal context to the N of the River Eden, but serves no apparent navigational purpose. It is, however, close to the E end of the main runway at Leuchars airfield (NO42SE 59.00), although off the extended centreline, and may have been a target. The suggestion (by UKHO) that it was a tide gauge remains unverified.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 30 October 2006.
