Archaeology Notes

NY37NE 126 3953 7836 to 3965 7826

This bridge carries the Riddings Junction (Waverley route) to Langholm branch of the North British Railway (subsequently London and North Eastern Rly.) across the Byre Burn. The branch opened on 18th April 1864 and closed to regular passenger traffic on 15 June 1964.

Prior to the opening of the line there had been concern over the Byreburn viaduct, bricks of inferior quality having apparently been incorporated into its foundations. Despite the assurances of the contractor, the original bridge collapsed a few days after the opening of the line. The present structure is thus apparently a replacement.
