Archaeology Notes

ND49SW 11 c. 424 940.

Petrie's notebook (Soc Antiq Scot MSS 29, notebook no.12, 1871, p.117-18, 139) states that 'graves were found outside the enclosure at Swartiquoy, Hoxay'. Further examination of the notebook, and reference to his paper make it almost certain that he is referring to a structure, not conclusively part of a chambered tomb, associated with the Little Howe of Hoxa (ND49SW 2).

Proc Soc Antiq Scot 1873

(ND 4309 9413) At Swartiquoy Petrie opened a mound containing a cist partially constructed of slabs and oriented NNE-SSW. It was 6ft long and 3ft 1in wide with its bottom formed of flat stones and was 2ft 8in below the surface. The S end slab on the E side projected about 1ft above the mound, as did another stone outside it and parallel to it at a distance of 4ft 6in. Near the latter was found a vessel, 1ft wide and 9 1/2in high, formed from a whale's vertebra.
