Opened in 1761, The Cross Keys Hotel originally dates to the era of the Edinburgh to Newcastle stagecoaches. The completion of the bridge over the River Tweed in 1755 allowed travellers on the road to stop for the night in Kelso, and a number of other coaching inns soon opened in the town. The broad white facade of The Cross Keys dominates one side of The Square and is the result of considerable remodelling work carried out in 1880. This added an extra floor as well as the decorative finials and balustrade visible at roof level. The ground-floor archway, which is now the entrance into the hotel, originally allowed horses and coaches to enter the stable yard which once stood at the rear of the hotel, and still serves as a reminder of the hotel's origins.
