Archaeology Notes

NT07NW 73.04 NT 0056 7702.

[This small aqueduct carries the Union Canal (built 1818-22, designer Hugh Baird) over a road leading to Clarendon Farm. LIN 18 general record gives details of the dimensions and constructon of the canal.]

(Undated) information in NMRS.

A lane to the S of the station goes under the canal at this point, a bowed parapet being visible.

H Brown 1997.

The canal traverses a minor road on this small aqueduct, which is clearly marked on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Linlithgowshire 1856, sheet 5), on the 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Linlithgowshire 1897, sheet 5NE) and on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1976). The OS 1:10000 raster map (ND) appears to show the road going over the canal, but this does not tally with the earlier maps or recent field observation (March 2001).

Information from RCAHMS (MD) 29 March 2001.
