Accessing Scotland's Past Project

At the heart of Kelso is the sett-covered market square. Setts, a traditional Scottish method of road surfacing, are square blocks of granite of whinstone, set closely together traditionally in a bed of sand to achieve a close fit, though cement is more commonly used today. Today the square has a Continental air, with its mixture of Georgian and Victorian buildings around the square. Notable amongst these is the Cross Keys Inn which harks back to the days of the London to Edinburgh stagecoach which passed through Kelso after 1754. However, it is the Town Hall that dominates The Square. Built in 1806, it owes its present appearance to rebuilding work in 1902-8.
