Accessing Scotland's Past Project

Edenside Road was laid out in the early nineteenth century, when the better-off citizens began building new houses and villas away from the crowded centre of Kelso. Kerfield was probably built before the mid-1850s, but must be after 1823 as it is not depicted on John Wood's 'Plan of the Town of Kelso' of that date.

Kerfield is a two-storeyed, ashlar-built, Regency villa, facing south toward the River Tweed. The centrally-placed doorway is flanked by full-height curved bays with central windows. There is a low-pitched, piended or 'hipped' roof, set behind a corniced wall-head with blocking course (a feature which resembles a parapet on top of the wall-head).
