Accessing Scotland's Past Project

Heiton Mill, a former farmsteading, lies on the east bank of the River Teviot, about 1km north-west of Heiton village.

Built in the late eighteenth century, Heiton Mill appears on several maps of late eighteenth- and nineteenth-century date. The steading buildings have crowstepped gables and are rubble-built enclosing a cobbled courtyard. The mill lies on the river bank, and is three storeys in height. While the mill machinery has been removed, the sluice and lade still survive. The mill cottages have been converted into a single two-storeyed dwelling.

The 1st edition of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map of Roxburghshire (1860), notes this as a corn mill but water power was used throughout the nineteenth century to drive a range of farm machinery such as threshing machines and machinery for processing wool.
