Archaeology Notes

NT51SW 85 5017 1478

Originally erected in 1888 as a boiler house and dyeworks for Messrs. William Galloway and Sons, the building remained in their hands for only five years. In 1898 the building was recorded, by Goodfellow, as being in the hands of Messrs. H Stevenson and Sons, Boxmakers, Manchester. Thereafter until 1914, when Messrs James Renwick and Company moved in, it is not known who occupied this building.

Information taken from The Industrial Archaeology of the Tweed and Hosiery Textiles Mills of Hawick, with particular reference to their development, ownership and prime movers between 1820 and 1930, October 1997

During March 1999, RCAHMS conducted a photographic survey of the remaining textile mill structures in Hawick. The purpose of this survey was to enhance and augment the holdings of the existing National Monuments Record Scotland.

Activities

Standing Building Recording (April 2016)

A record of this building, along with number 16 Commercial Road, was made by Gray Macpherson Architects in April 2016. This was done in accordance with a planning condition for conversion of the former engineering works into a distillery. The adjacent No. 16 (former mill and sweetie factory) was recorded prior to its demolition.
