(ND 4353 8957) Standing Stone (NR)
OS 6" map (1900).
See also ND48NW 3.
This stone, standing on the slope of the hill S of Cloddyhall, is oriented NNW-SSE, and is 8'6" high by 8" - 9" thick. At its base, where there are a few packing stones, it measures 4'2" across contracting to 3'1", 5' above ground level. The stone may possibly mark a burial, as a cist is said to have been found some years ago a few feet from its W side.
RCAHMS 1946, visited 1929
A standing stone as described by RCAHMS. An earthfast stone almost level with the ground occurs 2.8m WNW of the standing stone, but hasn't the appearance of a cist. According to Mr Mathieson (of Cloddyhall, Sandwick) no cist has ever been discovered "a few feet" from the stone, and this reference is most probably to the cist he found in the cairn 38.0m to the W (see ND48NW 3).
Surveyed at 1:2500.
Visited by OS (ISS) 2 May 1973
This standing stone is as described by RCAHMS and OS.
Visited by RCAHMS (DE) 20 August 1996.
Scheduled with ND48NW 3 as 'Clouduhall (or Cloddyhall) standing stone & cairn'.
Information from Historic Scotland, scheduling document dated 20 January 2004.
