Archaeology Notes

ND48NE 18 4624 8546

The site of Halcro Castle, according to Mr T Budge, Halcro farm who has removed lime mortared foundations when levelling the stackyard at Halcro. Allegedly the residence of Sir Hugh Halcro, who was knighted in 1314 at Bannockburn. According to Clouston the Halcros probably did not occupy Halcro until the late 15th century and "the size and position of Halacro were inconsistent with the status of the family."

Visited by OS, 4 May 1973.
