Cairn [NAT]

OS 1:10,000 map, 1983.

An artificial cairn used as a triangulation point.

Name Book, Aberdeenshire 1866.

Activities

Field Visit (13 July 1943)

The cairn on the summit of Learney Hill, a site which commands a wide view from an elevation of [354m] above sea-level, is marked in Roman letters on the 6-inch OS map and is undoubtedly modern. It appears, however, to stand on a foundation of stones which are heavily overgrown with moss and heather, and may well be ancient as it shows signs of recent disturbance. This foundation or spread mound of debris measures about 25ft by 20ft, and projects beyond the modern superstructure on all sides - on the NE resembling a well-curved platform up tp 6ft outside the cairn's periphery.

Visited by RCAHMS (AG) 13 July 1943.
