Activities

Desk Based Assessment (January 2005 - April 2007)

CFA Archaeology Ltd undertook an assessment of the likely effects on cultural heritage interests of the construction and operation of a proposed wind farm at Strathy North Forest, near Strathy, Sutherland (NGR: NC 81 58 centred).

Thirty-seven sites of cultural heritage significance have been identified by the assessment within the application area boundary, using a range of desk-based sources, consultations and reconnaissance field survey. Additional buried and unrecorded remains of archaeological significance may survive across the application area, and are considered more likely to occur in land bordering the River Strathy where known sites are concentrated.

Through an iterative design process it has been possible to avoid almost all known archaeological sites within the proposed wind farm area. Fourteen sites are predicted to receive direct impacts from the construction of the proposed access route but only one would receive a significant direct impact. Mitigation measures to reduce and offset predicted effects have been proposed, to be carried out either prior to development or during the construction phase.
