The location of the Shiels or West Scheel (Pont's map: Baronee of Renfrew, 1590) steading is certainly of considerable antiquity, and may be medieval in date. Although converted into an improvement steading in the late 18th century, this site offers the distinct possibility of tracing the earlier settlement pattern at this location.
The site is divided into two distinct elements, the farm house itself and the outbuildings, slightly to the W. The farm house is a two storey Georgian style building. Although the interior has been burnt out, the exterior is in very good condition. The outbuildings complex would appear to have retained its external and internal character and represents a fine example of small late 18th-century farm outbuildings. The outbuildings ground plan is rather unusual and reflects the earlier use of the SW structure prior to the construction of the rest of the buildings. Preliminary inspection of the site confirms that the SW building was probably in use prior to the reorganisation of the landscape.
