Shepherds' Cairn [NAT]

OS 6-inch map, 1961.

Situated on the summit of the Pike, this is one of six "shepherd's cairns" recorded by CFA in this area during field investigation as part of an environmental assessment for a proposed windfarm site in 1994 (others recorded on NT05SE 7-10). They are composed of stacked piles of large stones measuring up to 2m across and 1m high. None is indicated on the first edition OS coverage of 1864, although some are present on the second edition OS coverage of 1912, suggesting that these monuments are of no great antiquity.

CFA 1994s.
