Archaeology Notes

NY36NW 70 NY 33163 68004 (S) and NY 33163 68018 (N)

These two bridges carry the former A74 public road over the River Sark, which here forms the boundary between England and Scotland.

The old bridge (to the N) has been by-passed and is disused. It is a single-arched sandstone structure with lengthy rising approaches. Sandstone reinforcements have been added to the S side, and some settlement-cracking is evident. The arch-ring is of relatively unweathered stone and may be a replacement insertion.

The new bridge (25m to the S) carries the (re-aligned) present road. It is a single-span deck-type bridge of concrete construction supported by deep iron girders and sandstone abutments.

Visited by RCAHMS (RJCM), 27 February 1996.
