Activities

Field Visit (10 March 1994)

NX55NW 61 from 5250 5837 to 5382 5794

This road runs from the public road at NX 5250 5837 over Stronach Hill to the SE in the direction of Glen Farm and was traceable as far as NX 5382 5794, a distance of 1.4km. It is depicted on the 1st edition of the 6-inch map and labelled as an "Old Military Road" (Kirkcudbrightshire 1854, sheet 43). The best-preserved stretch is on the NW side of Stronach Hill, where it runs diagonally up the hill; at the hilltop it becomes deeply incised, with a number of hollow-ways cut by traffic, and it was not easily followed on the steep SE side of the hill, only becoming visible on the more gentle slope inside the head-dyke, where improvement has been limited. On the NW of the hill the camber of the roadway (6m across) is clearly visible, and there is a bank on either side, the upper of which is absent as it cuts a terrace in the side of the hill nearer the summit.
