Archaeology Notes

ND34NW 11 c. 33 45.

There is a group of stone rows, unassociated with any cairn, at Thrumster (ND 338 452).

J Anderson 1866.

There is no local knowledge of any stone rows at Thrumster. The nearest would seem to be those at Loch of Yarrows (ND34SW 22). Anderson may be referring to these.

Visited by OS (N K B) 4 April 1967.

No change to the previous field report.

Visited by OS (J B) 1 September 1982.

There is no evidence to suggest that a setting of stone rows ever stood at Thrumster. The setting of stone rows referred to by Anderson and Shearer are undoubtedly those at Battle Moss (ND34SW 22), which stood on the Thrumster estate and were well known in the mid-19th century. The site is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1877, sheet xxix) and Shearer would have been familiar with the monument in his capacity as estate factor.
