NT 242 728 An archaeological evaluation was conducted in July and August 2004 on part of a former Fountainbridge brewery complex (c 3.2ha) to the N of Dundee Street. Twenty-one trenches were excavated, with a combined basal area of 2637m2. No man-made features pre-dating the latter half of the 19th century were encountered, with the exception of a stone kerb, considered to be of early 19th-century origin.
A programme of historic building recording was undertaken on a building at 194 Dundee Street, on the southern boundary of the evaluation area, and a brief record was made of the earlier remains of buildings on the site, including the North Tunnel.

Fountain Brewery is situated beside the Union Canal in Fountainbridge, and was established by William McEwan in 1856, becoming part of Scottish Brewers in 1931 after a merger with Youngers, subsequently merging to create Scottish & Newcastle Brewers in 1960. In that time, the brewery has been thoroughly modernised, and by the time of survey in 2001, very little survived of the original fabric. However, there were also plans to withdraw from the site by 2005.

The Public Monuments and Sculpture Association (http://www.pmsa.org.uk/) set up a National Recording Project in 1997 with the aim of making a survey of public monuments and sculpture in Britain ranging from medieval monuments to the most contemporary works. Information from the Edinburgh project was added to the RCAHMS database in October 2010 and again in 2012.
The PMSA (Public Monuments and Sculpture Association) Edinburgh Sculpture Project has been supported by Eastern Photocolour, Edinburgh College of Art, the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust, Historic Scotland, the Hope Scott Trust, The Old Edinburgh Club, the Pilgrim Trust, the RCAHMS, and the Scottish Archive Network.

Round faced clock set in square casing. Two figures on top: a cavalier with a tankard and an old man with a top hat also carrying a tankard. The clock is fixed to the wall by a bracket decorated with thistles at its base.

West panel (right side when facing wall): scenes in brewery vaults. A man rolling a barrel towards a cart, two men rolling a barrel up a shaft, two men on a cart with barrels. On the right of the panel is a cart filled with barrels, and sheaves of barley.
