NO 630 940 Historic Scotland commissioned a field investigation to provide a case study into the impact of bracken infestation on archaeological deposits. This was achieved through the excavation of 14 test pits across a deserted medieval to post-medieval settlement, comprising two farmsteads, an isolated structure, and a series of field banks and clearance cairns (NMRS NO69SW 5; 12). A fragment of a medieval clasp was recovered from the isolated structure and evidence for the construction of the farmsteads was recorded. The test pits clearly demonstrated the damage caused by bracken to archaeological deposits.
