Field Visit (25 April 1994)

NX56SE 25 5583 6191

What may have been a lead mine (Cree94 287) is situated in a saddle to the SE of Little Bennan and SW of Upper Rusko Cottage. A trench (presumably a level), aligned from NNE to SSW, and 67m in length by 5m in depth and about 8m in breadth, runs into the hillside. The entrance to the mine probably lay at the SSW end of the level. There is a tradition that lead ore has been extracted on Little Bennan Hill (Wilson and Flett, 1921), possibly referring to this level.
