Project (1997)
The Public Monuments and Sculpture Association (http://www.pmsa.org.uk/) set up a National Recording Project in 1997 with the aim of making a survey of public monuments and sculpture in Britain ranging from medieval monuments to the most contemporary works. Information from the Edinburgh project was added to the RCAHMS database in October 2010 and again in 2012.
The PMSA (Public Monuments and Sculpture Association) Edinburgh Sculpture Project has been supported by Eastern Photocolour, Edinburgh College of Art, the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust, Historic Scotland, the Hope Scott Trust, The Old Edinburgh Club, the Pilgrim Trust, the RCAHMS, and the Scottish Archive Network.
Field Visit (30 October 2000)
Large marble relief composed of a central panel depicting Misfortune soothed by Wisdom: a draped seated male figure on the left, having his right hand held by an older standing male in profile on the right. The central panel is flanked by two naked mourning youths leaning on extinguished vertical torches. A profile head of Andrew Skene is on the entablature above. The outer sides and top corners are decorated with elaborate scrolls. There is a tall narrow vase supported by a shell/leaf-like console beneath each youth.
There are initials (?) to the right of the old man's feet (very worn).
Inscriptions : Under central panel (incised letters): MISFORTUNE SOOTHED BY WISDOM
On lower stone (incised letters centred):
TO THE MEMORY OF / ANDREW SKENE / SON OF DR. GEORGE SKENE PHYSICIAN IN ABERDEEN / BORN 26TH FEB. 1784 (?) / ENTERED THE FACULTY OF ADVOCATES 14TH JUNE 1806 (?) / SOLICITOR GENERAL FOR SCOTLAND 3RD NOVr 1834 (?) / DIED 2ND APRIL 1835 / A MARK OF AFFECTION AND GRATITUDE
