At the E end of Loch Watten, 200 yds from the shore is a small island, a round heap of stones about 4ft above the water; it bears every appearance of being artificial.
F O Blundell 1913.
Information from R McClements, Schoolhouse, Kiess to Blundell.
The island at the E end of Loch Watten at ND 2443 5585 measures 12.5m NE-SW by 10.5m transversely. It is composed of small stones and earth, surmounted by several larger stones and is almost certainly artificial. No trace of a causeway could be found.
Visited by OS (R D) 25 October 1965.
This is a crannog generally as described by the previous field investigator. The level of Loch Watten has been raised by damming the outflow, and around the island a submerged platform of large rubble stones is clearly visible indicating an original diameter of approximately 20.0m. There is no evidence of a causeway.
Visited by OS (N K B) 17 May 1982.
The crannog is visible on vertical air photographs (OS 89/202/087-8, flown 1989).
Information from RCAHMS (DE) July 1996.
ND 2443 5585 Loch Watten crannog (ND25NW 11) was found to consist of a large stone mound 35m in diameter and 2.8m from its lowest to highest points. No timbers were noted though several areas of vertical stones may represent ruinous walling.
