(ND 2624 3694) Short Cists found AD 1845 and 1865 (NAT)
OS 1:10,000 map, (1977)
A group of short cists was discovered about 1845 during trenching operations, about 50 yds from 'a large green cairn' (presumably ND23NE 3) along the base of a natural wall of rock at Achavar.
About 1865, R I Shearer relocated them and opened three of them.
J Anderson 1866.
The site occurs at the base of a natural ridge of rock running N-S. No other information.
Visited by OS (A A) 4 May 1967.
Archaeological Evaluation (6 July 2018 - 8 August 2018)
ND 26250 36947 An evaluation was undertaken, 6 July – 8 August 2018, in advance of the construction of a house and access road. The site is adjacent to the scheduled monument of Achavar Broch, and in the area where a series of prehistoric cist burials were discovered in the mid-19th century. The trenches targeted the footprint of the house and access road. All three trenches were archaeologically sterile. A subsequent watching brief during removal of topsoil also recorded no finds or features of archaeological significance.
