An area, measuring approximately 50m by 35m and located about 100m E of the castle, was machine stripped of turf and topsoil before the surface of a new visitor car park was laid. No features earlier than the numerous 19th and 20th-century field drains which traversed the site were uncovered within the area of investigation.
