Gallow Hill: A slight eminence situated about half a mile W of Thurso. MacKay (1829) mentions: 'There was a large stone on this hill at one time and it was erected to commemorate the hanging of the last two of the band of Highlandmen who took part in a skirmish in Thurso, between Donald Macalister, an Irishman who fought under Montrose, and the Thurso men. This affair happended on a Sunday in the year 1649'.
