Field Visit (22 February 1994)

NX55NE 45 568 567

On the saddle between Kirkbride and Ardwall Hills two levels have been driven into the hillside to the SW of the Military Road (LIN 518).

The N level (NX 5689 5675; Cree94 15) is visible as an overgrown trench, about 100m in length, orientated from ESE to WNW and measuring at least 2m across and about 2m in depth, possibly continuing under the Military Road. An 'Old Lead Mine' is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Kirkcudbrightshire 1854, sheet 43) at this location.

The second mine (NX 5692 5668; Cree 94 23) is situated to the SE, and is also visible as a trench, aligned from N to S, with, at its N end, about 10m of water-filled passage, running towards the Military Road.

(Cree94 15, 23)
