A cannon marked WC 216, GR crowned, was found encased in the concrete of a First World war gun emplacement on the site of the Montrose Barracks in August 1992. A 24-pounder, it dates to c1800, and is the work of Walker & Co of Rotherham. It is at present in the care of Glaxochem, Montrose, who have cleared the old Barracks site to create a car park.

Panmure Barracks are depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch and 25-inch maps (Fofarshire 1865). They were located between Garrison Road and Barrack Road and the site is now partly occupied by the Fire Station.
Vertical air photographs taken in 1946 (106G/Scot/UK 142, 5126-5127, flown 11 July 1946), show that little survived of the barracks at this date.

Project (March 2013 - September 2013)
A project to characterise the quantity and quality of the Scottish resource of known surviving remains of the First World War. Carried out in partnership between Historic Scotland and RCAHMS.
Note (12 September 2013)
Panmure Barracks is depicted on the 2nd and 3rd epoch OS maps of the town. It began life as a lunatic asylum in 1779 and was converted into a militia barracks in the mid-19th century. It was largely demolished between the wars. In the early part of 1914 many of the personnel of Montrose aerodrome were housed at Panmure, until accommodation was built on the aerodrome.
