Archaeology Notes

ND14SW 4 1098 4190.

Some 3/4 mile N by W of the shieling ruins at Thulachan (ND14SW 1) on a low green mound are the remains of a hut circle. The structure has been formed entirely of turf and is now much effaced. Its interior diameter is 22ft, the turf bank is 9ft thick, and there is an entrance in the S. RCAHMS 1911, visited 1910.

No hut circle was found 3/4 mile NW of ND14SW 1, but one was found about 1/2 mile in that direction. It lies on a green patch on rising ground, and is formed by a turf bank 9.0m in diameter and 0.3m high. The entrance appears to have been on the S. The remains of an enclosure 4.0m square, with a turf bank 0.3m high, lie 36m to the NW. These are probably shielings rather than prehistoric structures.

Visited by OS (E G C) 18 April 1961.

(ND 1098 4190) Old Shielings (NAT)

OS 6" map, (1962)

The alleged hut circle is undoubtedly an old sheepfold. The enclosure to the NW is the footing of an old shieling bothy.

Revised at 1:10560.
