Archaeology Notes

HY20NE 77 25279 07731

A WWII coast battery known as Links Battery consisting of a twin 6 pounder gun emplacement with engine room, still extant with a 12 pounder bolt ring near by.

J Guy 1993; NMRS MS 810/2; WO/192/266.

Links Battery is situated on a slight promontory about 450m SW of Point of Ness. The concrete and brick gun-emplacement lies between the road leading to Ness Battery (HY20NW 27.00) and the sea. The engine room for the electricity supply still survives at HY 25319 07762.

The battery is recorded in the Public Record Office files under WO/192/266, which notes that it was armed with two 12 pounders in July 1940, but by September this had been reduced to one twin 6-pounder, with one of the single 12 pounders guns being transferred to Carness Battery (HY41SE 51) in September 1940. One 12 pounder bolt ring has been noted immediately to the N of the gun-emplacement.

The accommodation camp, including the engine house, was situated immediately to the N of the road.

The battery and camp are visible on RAF vertical air photographs (CPE/Scot/UK185, 2440-2441, flown 9 October 1946).
