From a depot situated beneath the SE slopes of Calton Hill, Campbeltown (NR 714 209), the first leg of the canal ran westwards, parallel to Mill Lade. Part of this section is clearly visible between the farms of Hillside (NR 711 213) and Gortan (NR 702 215), where it appears as a hollow way running about 18m to the S of Mill Lade. A little to the N of Gortan, where it is again visible as a hollow way some 6m in width, the canal swung southwards and ran towards North Moy, [Now (1994) Nos.1 and 2 Moy Holdings: NR 700 208].

RCAHMS 1971, visited June 1967.

NR 7145 2093 to NR 7140 2130 No trace: built over, and a playing field.

NR 7140 2130 to NR 7022 2160 Shallow ploughed depression under pasture.

NR 7022 2160 to NR 7000 2130 Ploughed-down embankment indicates raised course of canal.

Visited by OS (NKB) 6 November 1977.

On the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Argyllshire 1869, sheet cclvii) the canal is clearly marked as Old Canal and then Old Course of Canal, from its commencement at the Coal Depot in Campbeltown to a point (NR 7007 2144) SW of Gortan.
