The line of the canal across this map sheet appears to have run from a terminal at Port Elphinstone (NJ 777 203), where the basin has been infilled but the buildings remain, to the SSE down the W side of the River Don.

A Graham 1969.

The canal has apparently (OS 6-inch map, Aberdeenshire, 2nd ed., sheet liv.NE, 1901) drawn its water supply from the River Don in the vicinity of Inverurie Bridge: inlet sluices and channels are noted at NJ 7764 2059 and 7769 2059 respectively.

The disused canal remains noted on the 1965 edition of the OS 1:10,000 map. It appears to have been re-used as a lade for water supply to the Broomend Mills (NJ71NE 78.00) at NJ 782 198, where the surviving section is depicted as terminating.

The water inlet, Port Elphinstone and the line of the canal across this map sheet are at an elevation of between 50 and 55m OD.

Information from RCAHMS (RJCM), 26 October 1994.

Location cited by GRC/AAS as NJ 778 203.

NMRS, MS/712/36.

The short section of canal in the S of this map sheet takes a different route from the North of Scotland Railway, which has overlain it for much of its course. The residual stretch is clearly marked on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Aberdeenshire 1869, sheer liv). It heads generally in a NW direction to a terminus known as Port Elphinstone (NJ72SE 124.00).

Information from RCAHMS (MD) 15 May 2002.
