Archaeology Notes

NJ66SE 49.02 68925 64433

NJ 6893 6444. Pillbox built onto wall facing up S breakwater; two loopholes and a doorway, the latter partially blocked.

Visited by Mr J Guy, 17 November 1992.

A stone and concrete pillbox has been built into a wall situated on the W side of in Harbour Place, below Sheriffs Brae and overlooking Banff Harbour.

The structure has utilised the stone wall by retaining the lower part and 'grafting' the concrete upper part on to the stone-work. The flat roof is slightly raised above the level of the grass and the entrance in the wall to the N is now totally blocked up and has brick on both sides. The two loopholes retain the stepped metal inserts.

About 8m to the N is a circular metal plate with a central hole with a notch each side. Use and purpose is unknown.

Note (14 June 2023)

Two concrete blocks are visible on a photograph of the harbour (SC1879450). These blocks formed part of a road block to restrict access from the South Pier of Banff harbour, and protected by the Pillbox built into the stone wall on the W side of Harbour Place. The same photography shows the concrete roof and emergency escape hatch of the pillbox in the foreground.
