Archaeology Notes

NJ90NE 25 95295 08738

There is a concrete road block set in the side at NJ 9530 0833 (see NJ90NE 35), to the S of the pillbox.

J Guy 1992.

(Location cited as NJ 9531 0875). Type 27 pillbox; 8 sides, 7 loopholes, door, and well in roof for light anti-aircraft gun.

Visited by Mr J Guy, 28 July 1992.

NMRS, MS/712/8.

This pillbox is situated immediately W of the road that runs along the esplanade at Aberdeen. Hexagonal on plan and constructed of shuttered steel-reinforced concrete, it is a pillbox of Wills' (1985) Type 27, measuring 7.4m from NW to SE by 6.9m overall and about 2.6m in height. Five of the six sides are pierced by loopholes, and the sixth, on the WNW, contains the entrance, which is protected by a baffle wall with an opening on the NNE. In the centre of the flat roof there is a hexagonal well measuring up to 2.3m across by 1.6m in depth. This once contained a central spigot on which an anti-aircraft machine-gun could be mounted. A narrow opening in the NE side of the well gives entry into the interior of the pillbox.

Visited by RCAHMS (JRS) 25 June 1996.
