Archaeology Notes

ND13SE 30 c. 165 311

A silver penannular brooch was found in 1860 by William Sutherland of Achavrole (ND 165 311) when making a drain from his house. His pick broke it into fragments. Of these fragments only one is known to survive: this is the so-called 'Dunbeath Brooch', in the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (NMAS, Accession no: FC 9).

J Anderson 1880; Information contained in letter from W Sutherland to J Anderson 28 January 1879.

Datable to about 700 AD.

Information from C W Phillips, Dark Age map index, 2nd ed.
