Archaeology Notes

NT27SE 554 2604 7360

Watching brief during the final phases of construction of the Scandic Crown Hotel allowed further investigation of an area, peripheral to the excavations of 1973 (NT27SE 206) and 1977, which lies immediately to the S of the area of the Abbot of Melrose's house, investigated by Peter Yeoman (NT27SE 457). The site, to the rear of the standing buildings along Blackfriars Street, had been terraced in the post-medieval period and all ealier archaeolgical deposits cleared to clay subsoil. The S wall of the demolished tenement had been erected using a pre-existing wall, which ran E to W along the same line as a section of wall identified to the W by Schofield as the 15th century King's Wall. The wall footing was subsequently preserved in situ by the developer.

NT 260 736 An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in May 2006 to provide information ahead of a forthcoming planning application. Three trenches were excavated covering 20m, 10% of the available area. All contained modern make-up and demolition deposits; natural clay was reached in one trench at 2.7m below the ground surface, 63.66m OD. The results of the evaluation suggested that cellars associated with previous building on the site have removed any earlier medieval or post-medieval archaeology that may otherwise have been expected.

Archive and report to be deposited in NMRS. Report lodged with CECAS.
