Archaeology Notes

NM70NW 11 73564 08984

This tacksman's house, although much altered internally, is an early dated example of the improved farmhouse, of two storeys and slated roofs, that were constructed in large numbers in Nether Lorn during the late 18th and 19th centuries. The original rectangular house was built in 1787 and this additional wing is probably of early 19th century date.

This tacksman's house (Pl.86E) is situated about 350 m NE of Black Mill Bay on the W coast of Luing. Although much altered internally, the house is interesting as an early dated example of the improved farmhouses, of two storeys with slated roofs, that were constructed in large numbers in Nether Lorn during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The original rectangular house was built in 1787; an additional wing, which makes the building L-shaped on plan, is probably of early 19th-century date. The original block, which measures 7'1 m by 12'5 m, faces S and is of three bays with a central doorway, now enclosed within a later porch. Between two of the first floor windows there is a slate panel bearing the inscription: BUILT BY / PATRICK MCDOUGALL / 1787. The N elevation is lit by several irregularly-placed windows of varying sizes; a central doorway gives access to the yard and steading. In the original arrangement of the interior it is probable that a central staircase was flanked by two rooms on each floor. A later wing has been added on the E, with its S wall continuing the line of the original block. This addition has a door in the S wall, and windows larger in size than those of the original building.

RCAHMS 1975, visited May 1970.
