Field Visit (20 September 1991)

NT19SE 56.00 17679 94086

NT19SE 56.01 17696 94045 Dovecot

There is a marriage stone (Cleish91 398) above the back door of Wester Cartmore farmhouse. It bears the date 1680 and initials IS, MM. A moulded door-jamb has been reused in the SSW wall of the steading.

The dovecot (NT 1767 9403; Cleish91 397) is situated at the S corner of the garden to the rear of the farmhouse. It stands 6m high, measures 3m in diameter and is constructed of mortared rubble. Most of its stone nesting boxes are still intact, and there is a boarded-up entrance on the NNE. An external rat ledge encircles the doocot at about 2.7m above ground level, and there is a moulded projecting lip at the wallhead.

The dovecote as been roofless since 1937. The marriage stone, door-jamb, and dovecote may be associated with 'Kirkmore', a house depicted hereabouts on Roy's map (W Roy 1747-55).
