Field Visit (2 June 1992)

The footings of Lethans Cottages (Cleish91 53), which comprised two rows of cottages with their attendant gardens, lying at right angles to one another, are situated in the angle created by the track to West Lethans and a dismantled railway that served West Lethans Pit No.1. The footings and are constructed of Lochside bricks and the remains of the brick-built chimney-bases survive in at least two places. The cottages are depicted as roofed on the 1915 revision of 2nd edition of the OS 6-inch map (Fifeshire, 1915, sheet xxxiii.3) and the OS map evidence suggests that the cottages had, at most, a lifespan of 25 to 30 years.
